Regarding the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā: because the text is extensive, it is pointed out rather than quoted, and is now briefly summarized. Its “Chapter on Praising Precepts” says: “A bodhisattva who purely maintains śīla in this way can embrace all kinds of virtues.” It also says: “It is the foremost place of joy for renunciants, accomplishing all great benefits for renunciants, and so forth.” The “Chapter on the Retribution of Precepts” says: “A bodhisattva practices the profound prajñāpāramitā (purifying śīla); if not yet free from desire, he becomes a wheel-turning sage king over the four continents, obtaining a thousand-spoked golden wheel, its rim adorned with various jewels, its hub made of lapis lazuli, fifteen li in circumference, protected together by hundreds of yakṣa spirits, and so forth.” Question: Is the citation above praising the bodhisattva precepts or the śrāvaka precepts? Answer: One must distinguish two meanings. In terms of a general discussion, the lesser does not encompass the greater, while the greater inevitably embraces the lesser, as in the Nirvāṇa and Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtras. In terms of a particular discussion, they do not mutually encompass each other; what is cited here borrows the greater to praise the lesser, as in the Avataṃsaka and Daśabhūmika.
