In the Dharmaguptaka, it first cites the five virtues of maintaining precepts: the upper three pertain to oneself, and the fourth pertains to others. Furthermore, the first and third are generating good, the second and fourth are extinguishing evil, and the fifth is self-evident. “Overcoming all enemies” refers to the four Māra enemies: the five aggregates, afflictions, death, and the heavenly Māra. Further below, it cites the ten benefits of instituting precepts. Whenever the Tathāgata instituted a precept, he always said it had ten kinds of benefits; here it mentions the first benefit. Second, causing the saṅgha to rejoice; third, causing the saṅgha to abide in ease (the Precept Commentary says: these three clarify that the precepts generate the virtues of the community); fourth, causing the non-believers to believe; fifth, causing believers to increase [their faith]; sixth, causing those who are difficult to tame to be tamed; seventh, causing the conscientious to attain peace and happiness; eighth, severing present outflows; ninth, severing future outflows (these six generate virtues for individual persons: the upper two generate good, and the lower four extinguish evil); tenth, causing the true Dharma to endure long (this one establishes the practice of the true Dharma).
