In the five dharmas of extinction in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: there, because the Elder Nandi said to the Buddha, "After the extinction of the True Dharma, at the time of the Semblance Dharma, how many unlawful things will there be?", here only the Buddha's answering words are cited. First, because of falsely professing virtue; second, because monastics and laypeople are reversed; third, because of betraying spiritual practice; fourth, because evil cliques flourish; fifth, because good people are weak. These five dharmas of extinction are all caused by destroying the precepts. Saying "a slight attainment of mind": "mind" is simply samādhi, such as the five meditations on settling the mind and the four stations of mindfulness. This refers to claiming realization when one has not realized it, confusing the multitude and shocking the world. In the present day, [people claiming] "I am immediately Buddha" are also the same matter. Second: The Karma Commentary says: "Laypeople have no teachings [of renunciation]; merely by exclusively believing and honouring them, they attain rebirth in heaven. Monastics have the teachings and serve as fields of merit for the world; yet on the contrary they violate them, falsely accept gifts from the faithful, and open various doors to evil, causing many sentient beings to emulate their heedlessness; therefore they enter hell." Furthermore, in the Sūtra on the Seven Dreams of Ānanda: he dreamed that monastics fell into a pit of filth, while laypeople in white robes stepped on their heads and climbed out. The Buddha told Ānanda: "In the future, bhikṣus will kill one another out of jealousy and die to enter hell, while laypeople in white will be diligent and die to be born in heaven." Third: as King Kṛki dreamed of a great elephant confined in a room with only a small window; the elephant got its great body out of the room, but was still blocked by its small tail. This symbolizes the disciples of Śākya who abandon worldly occupations to leave home, like hurling their bodies out, yet cling greedily to fame and profit, like being blocked by the small tail. Fourth: as the king dreamed of many monkeys pouring water over the head of a mangy monkey and establishing it as king. This symbolizes the Buddha's disciples establishing precept-breakers as their leaders. In the fifth: "and so forth" abbreviates ordinary precept-keepers, worthy and noble learners, and others. The Sūtra on the Total Extinction of the Dharma states: "The Buddha told Ānanda: 'After my nirvāṇa, in the evil world of the five turbidities, the path of Māra will flourish. Māra will become a śramaṇa and disrupt my path. … Up to the multitudes of bodhisattvas, pratyekabuddhas, arhats, and those diligently cultivating virtue, the Māra-bhikṣus will all detest and envy them, expelling them and not allowing them to dwell.'" (The above were all cited by the ancient commentary; although they are numerous in the text, they greatly aid mental practice, so they are recorded accordingly. Moreover, these are things seen with our own eyes in present times; knowing the Buddha's foresight, one can spur oneself on to diligence.)
