In explaining striking by laypeople, first the text of the precept against eating apart from the group is cited. It explains that a householder prepared food, carried it into Jetavana, and struck the gaṇḍī; when the bhikṣus asked, he replied that he was inviting the bhikṣus to eat. From "and so forth" downward sets forth the prātideśanīyas, the first phrase setting forth the second precept. It arose because a householder invited the Buddha and the two divisions of the saṅgha; on the following day when the mealtime arrived, in the early morning he arranged the seats and sent a messenger to announce to the Buddha that the time had come. (This proves the practice of calling out the announcement.) From "and..." downward sets forth the fourth precept. It states that women carried food into the monastery, struck the gaṇḍī, and distributed the food to the saṅgha, and so forth. From "midday meal" downward, it is not clear which text this comes from.
