In the prescribed regulation, first is the origin. From "The Buddha said" downward establishes the regulation; first it lists and indicates the four marks. From "having..." downward explains the person who can strike [it]. From "not..." downward explains the method of striking. The three sequences are as explained below. Blowing the conch follows the person who strikes above, hence it says "likewise"; that [vinaya] states that the śrāmaṇera or garden-keeper blows it. From "except..." downward excludes materials. For lacquer-poison wood, tradition has it that it is feared it might injure the hands. The above explains the time of poṣadha. From "if..." downward explains the times of the major and minor meals. When there are many dwellings, it is because separate rooms are scattered far apart. From "if..." downward explains permissions. The Commentary states: "This regulation for summoning the saṅgha is not something to be done by one possessing the path; only when there are certainly not two persons is it permitted for him to assist concurrently."
