簡淨穢中，初文。自行取淨，唯約自知；微有所犯，悔已同法；不爾，必約三根檢勘清濁；清可預數，濁必擯治。根不外彰，亦容參預故也。

In distinguishing purity and defilement, the first text [deals with self-examination]. In taking purity for one's own practice, it is only based on one's own knowing: if one has even slightly committed a violation, once confessed, one conforms to the Dharma. Otherwise, one must investigate purity and turbidity based on the three grounds: the pure may be counted in the quorum, while the turbid must be expelled and corrected. This is because when the grounds are not outwardly manifested, one is still permitted to participate.
