In the next section, on distinguishing purity, the first three sentences distinguish and determine it. The text omits pavāraṇā. From "below" onward, it explains and establishes it: first it explains poṣadha. The upper clause restricts the one capable of reciting, and the lower clause restricts the one listening. Next, it explains the confession of offenses. The upper clause restricts the one capable of confessing, and the lower clause restricts the one receiving [the confession]. Question: "All karmans are subsumed under the two approaches of generating good and extinguishing evil; how are they divided?" Answer: "Rites such as various confessions of offenses, disciplinary punishments, expulsions, settling disputes, and administering admonitions are called extinguishing evil; everything outside these is named generating good. Formerly, seeing the phrase 'generating good' below, people classified this as extinguishing evil, causing later students to falsely assume that poṣadha and pavāraṇā are both subsumed under extinguishing evil. One should know that both kinds are fully clarified in the text: poṣadha belongs to generating good, while confession belongs to extinguishing evil. If the wise examine this, let them fortunately not confuse them."
