Two persons are added by reasoning. First, the drunken person, who appears in the relinquishment of precepts during the ordination rite. Second, the four sentences from "speaking to oneself" onward are one person, which is just like the text on relinquishing precepts cited above. The upper two sentences clarify that he himself does not understand; the lower two sentences clarify that the other does not understand. The sentence from "this is" onward directly reveals the judgment by reasoning. All other persons have textual proof from various schools; only these two lack it. Since by principle they cannot complete the quorum, they are called "added by reasoning"; it does not mean the Patriarchal Master added them out of his own opinion. (The *Old Record* says: "Three persons were added by reasoning, taking the person who does not understand as the person who does not understand the Vinaya." This is incorrect: first, it fails to recognize what was added by reasoning; second, its reading of the sentence breaks the syntax; third, it does not understand that dullness and stupidity refer to the person who does not understand the Vinaya, as explained below and in the *Karma Commentary*; the above total thirty-one persons.)
