In [the section on] being separated from sight and hearing, it first clarifies the place. In the open air, one merely takes not reaching with the hands; hence it is restricted to covered places that this mark occurs. Like "sleeping in a room," this is the precept on sleeping with a woman in the ninety [pāyattikas]; the marks of a room are four: (1. screened on all four sides with a roof above; 2. open in front without a wall; 3. roofed but not completely; 4. completely roofed but with an opening, as fully explained below). From "this" onward, it shows what one is separated from. In the rite of transmitting desire below, separation from both sight and hearing constitutes a failure, and here it is the same. From "as below" onward, it indicates abbreviation. Anciently there were different opinions, so it points to them as such, but that text is already lost. The *Karma Commentary* states: "The present interpretation is that all are viewed in relation to sitting together successively, and is not based on the officiant of the karman; as when a wheel-turning [king] recites the precepts, or eighty thousand perform pavāraṇā, how could all hear it universally? It only requires that they be contiguous, and then it is not a dissenting assembly, etc."
