1.309

釋自言者。前雖累云自言，猶恐未曉，故示言相。一須對告前人；二須言義明了，能使他知；方成不足。慈訓深切，故此委曲。

In explaining 'speaking of one's own accord': although 'speaking of one's own accord' was mentioned repeatedly before, there is still fear that it is not understood, so the marks of speaking are shown. First, one must address the person face to face; second, the meaning of the words must be distinct and clear so that the other person can understand; only then does it constitute an insufficiency in number. The compassionate instructions are profound and earnest, which is why it is so detailed here.
