Under division into fascicles, the first section refutes opposing views. These either truly existed at the time or were posited in advance as a precaution. If compared with other masters' collections of doctrines on ritual transactions, this might seem overly detailed and prolix; yet failing to fathom the profound intention, it must be clarified. (Later generations made 'Tests on Ritual Transactions', which were utterly contrary to the Patriarch's intent.) "Agreeing with me" and "differing views" both refer to whether the inclinations of others accord or conflict. Just as when worldly songs are sung, those who harmonize must strike an object to sound the meter; "meter" refers to the major sections of a tune, hence called "major nodes". "Reproach" is like censuring. From "The text is verbose; by whom..." onward, it shows the intention. "Fond of" means liking; "attain" means obtaining. From "Why..." onward, it further explains why he could not desist: first, it raises the question; from "If..." onward, it properly explains. First, it clarifies the necessity of detail; from "Must..." onward, it shows that it is not superfluous. "General outline" is like a rough sketch. "Inordinate criticism" refers to unreasonable verbosity. "Taboo" means avoiding. A manual takes extracting essentials and comprehensive inclusion as its principle; words that are not urgent are not appropriate.
