Next, in [the section on] validity or invalidity, it explains the characteristics of whether a separate assembly is constituted or not. In the primary differentiation, in the first section, the upper two phrases explain validity: committing offenses of the lower chapters does not destroy the root. The phrase beginning 'Committing offenses separately...' explains invalidity: the root is already destroyed, so saṃgha rites are severed. The text is further divided into two parts: first, explaining the validity of the rite based on lack of knowledge. It cites from the Vinaya the case of thinking there is an act when there is none, to draw an analogy to thinking the defiled is pure, for in principle there is no discrepancy. When it says 'the karmavācanā is valid', the Buddha has determined that the rite is valid; this makes clear that it is not a separate assembly. The offense is a duṣkṛta. 'Their minds did not agree' brings out the intention behind establishing the offense. The phrase beginning 'If carefully...' is the second part, explaining that according to whether the assembly knows, it becomes a separate assembly accordingly.
