In the answer: The first text has three parts. First, it explains the Vinaya's circumstances: in the Vinaya it was originally opened as an exception for sick persons. The complete is the one extensive form, and the incomplete refers to the four abbreviated forms. From "Because..." onward shows the reasons for completeness and incompleteness. From "The text..." onward is the second part, citing and showing it. In the "Poṣadha" [Chapter] it says: "A bhikṣu addressed the Buddha, 'A sick bhikṣu has not come.' The Buddha said, 'From now on, I permit conferring chanda. If he says, "I confer chanda to you," conferring chanda is achieved'" (The Transactions Manual places this sentence below, also writes the word 'you' as 'I', and further adds the word 'say'; the Annotated Karmavācanā accords with the Vinaya, showing that the Transactions Manual has a clerical transcription error and reversal); "'If he says, "I speak chanda," conferring chanda is achieved'" (which is the first sentence in the Transactions Manual); the other three are likewise, and all below say "conferring chanda is achieved." The Karma Commentary divides them into two: four abbreviated and one extensive; and further divides them into two: four of speech and one of body. From "The former..." onward is the third part, judging the meaning. Within the four severe illnesses, it further distinguishes light and severe: the top three are still light, while the physical manifestation is the most severe. In the extensive, the illness is light; if while sick it is still spoken extensively, for the healthy it can be known.
