Detailed explanation of karmavācanā. Previously, saṃgha and individual were both treated; individual procedures can be understood, so this one chapter exclusively clarifies saṃgha procedures. In narrating the intention, the first three lines show the intention. 'Guiding principles' refers to the initial explanation of the text, which is the main substance of the karmavācanā (one need not forcibly divide guiding principles and conditions). 'Openness and obstruction' refers to the subsequent differentiation, showing the distinctions in textual meaning (one need not restrictively point to a single section). From 'If' downward shows false assumptions. From 'Yet' downward explains the point of error. The upper two lines are concession, and the lower two lines are refutation. 'Knowing the point' means that guiding principles are definitely invalid [if altered], while conditions may admit validity or invalidity. One cannot treat them uniformly, hence it says 'one must not', and so forth. (The Rites state: 'Do not thunderously echo [others]'; the commentary says: 'When thunder makes sound, nothing fails to respond simultaneously.')
