Under 'reprimanding attachment to the text': the first two lines show generally. From 'Or' downward explains separately: first, reprimanding continuously chanting and concluding with abbreviation. In all jñapticaturthā karmavācanā procedures, the translation condensed the text, and therefore inserted these words; they should not be chanted. From 'Or' downward is the second, reprimanding exclusive attachment to phrasing. The first line is like the concealment procedure in the Vinaya, which merely says, 'So-and-so committed a saṃghāvaśeṣa and concealed it; the saṃgha now grants so-and-so the karmavācanā corresponding to the days of concealment'; however, the prior offenses have differences, and the days of concealment may be many or few; if one chants according to the Vinaya, it will not match the previous matter. (The 'Chapter on Deśanā' states: 'Performing the procedure according to the Manual achieves validity; if based on the text of the Vinaya, following the ancient karmavācanā, one must alter it and cannot rigidly chant it'—this is what it means.) The next line is like the procedure for rewarding labor, which fully lists the six articles; if articles are missing, it must be altered; now people still chant according to it (the note below says: 'State them according to what is present'—this is what it means). 'Both present' is like the procedure for receiving days, which lists the conditions of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṃgha, writing in succession 'half a month' and 'one month'; although text and matter are both complete, it is improper to list both (the text below says: 'One must not chant both half a month [and one month]'—this is what it means). 'Both absent' is like the procedure for binding a great boundary with a platform, where the Vinaya lacks the textual matter, yet one does not add it (the text below says: 'One must add the inside and outside markers'—this is what it means). It can also be like the procedure of reprimand, where the text is based on quarreling, but if there are other offenses, one fails to alter it accordingly. (The text below says: 'And when discussing that time, it is not necessarily as the text.') This leads downward to: being reprimanded by those who know the Dharma, leaving one at a loss as to what to do.
