正明中，初科，上二句明教起由機。人既下四句，明機別教廣。攝誘謂曲施方便，弘濟謂普令獲益。軌用即一切事法，止作兩行。上句明能說之意，下句顯所說之教。貴下六句，敘今從要。本詮謂教之大旨；對下條緒，即事之別相。所以等者，探後二例，示本詮相。（開制，即第二；持犯即第一。或可此二通該五例，以一一例中竝具兼故。）驗諒二字，謂以智窮考。旨意二字，即立教本懷。諒，信也。今下，總標。一部之文，不過五例；以少明多，故云束也。

In "the main explanation", in the first section, the first two lines clarify that the arising of teachings stems from faculties. The four lines from "Since people..." downward clarify that faculties differ and teachings are broad. Gathering and inducing refers to applying expedient means accommodatingly; broadly rescuing refers to universally enabling benefit to be attained. Standards and applications refers to all transactional procedures, both the practice of cessation and the practice of performance. The upper line clarifies the intent of the speaker, and the lower line reveals the taught doctrine. The six lines from "Valuing..." downward narrate the present focus on essentials. The fundamental message refers to the grand purport of the teaching; contrasted with the specific threads below, it denotes the particular marks of affairs. The phrase "The reason that..." anticipates the latter two patterns to show the character of the fundamental message. (Exceptions and prohibitions are the second; maintenance and violation are the first. Alternatively, these two universally cover all five patterns, because each pattern fully encompasses them.) The two characters "examine and verify" mean exhaustively investigating with wisdom. The two characters "aim and intent" mean the original underlying intention of establishing the teaching. "Verify" means to trust. The text from "Now..." downward is a general heading. The text of the entire Vinaya does not exceed five patterns; to illuminate the many by means of the few, it is therefore said to "compress" them.
