Under 'Clarifying the Yojana': first citing the equivalence of measure across the four vinayas. As the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya says: 'At that time, there were those who demarcated boundless boundaries; the Buddha prohibited them, [stating that] the utmost distance should be three yojanas.' 'Meeting at the corners' means the cardinal and intermediate directions are of equal measure. Next, citing the Treatise [on the Great Perfection of Wisdom] (Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra) to show that yojanas vary: first, listing the three grades. From 'This...' onward, explaining the reason: over level and smooth ground it is extended and made long, whereas over perilous and rugged ground it is reduced and made short. The Commentary says: 'Yojana is a Central Indian name for a measure, properly called yojana. Here there is no direct translation; it was the resting lodge during an imperial tour of a Cakravartin king, like the ancient relay pavilions here—how could it be restricted to a specific number of li! Speaking broadly, it is forty li, which has been handed down by tradition as standard.' (This differs from the Abhidharmakośa.) Under 'Dharmaguptaka Robe Dharma': that text says that various Śākyans were able to shoot arrows far, some hitting the target at one yojana, or seventy li, down to thirty li. Since a yojana is listed above seventy li, it therefore says 'inferred to have...', and so on. From 'This...' onward, resolving the Vinaya in accordance with the treatise.
