The eight kinds of other schools all have measurements and are easy to understand in the text. The difficult ones are briefly explained. Second, "smooth stone": according to the treatise, the character mān has the water radical, meaning having no ridges or corners. In the fourth, "eight inches": this measurement is too small, and one fears it may break, so it can only be used temporarily; if one makes an enduring one, one must select a larger one. In the fifth, "three or four villages": where people go back and forth, it will definitely not be abandoned; the treatise says that dead-end roads are not allowed (the furthest ending roads). In the sixth, "four months": out of the three seasons, it brings up one season; because it is free of drought for a long time, the mark is not lost; the treatise also says: "If the water is two cubits deep, it may be used." In the seventh, ants working the soil into mounds are called ant hills. In the eighth, "natural water": it is not artificially made; the treatise says: "If water is channeled into fields, or held in jars, none of these may be used." From "According to…" downward reconciles them; "verify" means to prove. "City walls, moats, and so forth": as listed above, enduring objects such as mountains, rocks, ravines, ditches, groves, trees, and walls; the Vinaya only lists them generally without clarifying demarcations, so they must be verified by the treatise. However, in the treatise, roads, rivers, and pond waters are also difficult to rely on. How could needle-trees and ant hills be enduring? If for transactions today, they cannot be completely relied upon.
