In the third, the first four sentences clarify maintaining the precepts. In "except...", it clarifies breaking the precepts; this is broadly divided into two: first, up to "reprimand and punish", it exhorts laypeople to respect and protect [them]; from "the four directions...", the second explains that both wealth and Dharma are lost. The first passage again has two: first, it exhorts with reference to retribution; from "breaking the precepts...", it next exhorts with similes. In the first part, the first two sentences set aside those who act according to the Dharma. In "if...", it explains the efficacy of those who break precepts. Clarifying the breaking of precepts here must refer to committing heavy [offenses]. Under "devas and dragons...", that text fully lists yakṣas up to humans and non-humans; here, the text condenses them. In "should...", it exhorts laypeople to be reverent. As for the ten superior perceptions: first, one should form the perception of recollecting the Buddha; second, one should contemplate the noble precepts; third, one should give rise to a mind of giving; fourth, be gentle and straightforward, constantly practicing forbearance; fifth, do not become hasty and violent, with a mind free of wild confusion; sixth, delight in the True Dharma; seventh, always be fond of quiet araṇya places; eighth, desire to enter the fearless city of Nirvāṇa; ninth, converse with soft words; tenth, bow to their feet. (The manual cites the first, third, ninth, and tenth; the remaining six are not distinctly clear in the sūtra, hence they are divided in detail.) In "after...", it shows the retribution. In "this is...", it concludes the meaning. Next, in exhorting with similes, it first raises a simile. In "ox-bezoar...", the sūtra says: "Though this ox is dead, people still take it; it is also like musk, which is useful after death." It also says: "Like a merchant entering the great ocean who destroys the lives of immeasurable beings, gouges out both their eyes, and blends them into a medicine; if one is blind without eyes, or even born blind from the womb, and one smears this medicine on them, their eyes become clear and bright (though that person is dead, his medicine has efficacy)." It also says: "Like burning incense; though the body of the incense is destroyed, it perfumes others to make them fragrant." In "breaking...", it applies the similes. The first three sentences correspond to the death of the ox, the musk deer, and the person, as well as the destruction of the incense body; under "able to...", it corresponds to the usefulness of the incense and medicine, and the incense fragrance perfuming others. In "by this...", it concludes the meaning.
