In reproaching irregularities, the first two sentences lament that it is not practiced in these times. From "if...", the second part reproaches the belittling and violation of the correct teaching. "Belittling" means slighting people; "irregularity" means deceiving the teaching. With these two minds of belittling and irregularity, fettering karmas accumulate, further increasing delusion and darkness, hence it says "defiling oneself", and so on. In "there are...", it clarifies the reckless execution of unlawful acts. "Quan" means to reform. In "causing...", it reveals the damage. "Net" means the net of the teaching. "Yun" means trust. In "now...", the third part shows the intent and encourages practice. "Subtle words" refers to the methods of governance, all of which are the Buddha's sincere teachings. Having been hidden and now revealed again, they are called "renewed radiance". "Powerful" means that one's virtue can win people over, not merely being overbearing and clinging to worldly influence. "Sustaining the Dharma" means having an aspiration to shoulder the teaching, not merely usurping a residence. Alas, today's lecturers do not engage in far-reaching study, and their practice is worldly and mediocre; flattering the world and following the times, they act as masters and occupy high seats; luxuriating in the four requisites, they gather flocks of disciples; pursuing the five wrong livelihoods, they greedily seek gain and support; who cares about propagating the Triratna? They only know how to adorn themselves with empty show; not understanding the vinaya deportment, how can they regulate the assembly? Following their own conjectures, they recklessly establish rules and articles, imposing fines of rice, ransoming with incense, burning robes, and using the rod; they cause the monastic order to become chaotic and corrupt, and the Buddha's teaching to be dragged through the dust. The Way depends on humans to propagate it; who shall shoulder this charge? Alas!
