合治中，上二句通標。但下，略舉無知示相。聖制學者，不出教行；教謂律藏，行謂對治，即可學境也；愚暗纏者，謂可學迷也。文下，引證。不知，謂素所未聞；不見，謂聞而不識；未必須犯，但不知見，即合加治。

In [the section on] applying disciplinary treatment together, the upper two sentences generally label [the topic]. The text from "only" downwards briefly adduces ignorance to demonstrate the marks. What the sages instituted for trainees does not go beyond teaching and practice: teaching refers to the Vinaya Piṭaka, and practice refers to counteractive methods, which are the objects of study; being entangled in foolish darkness refers to delusion regarding what is to be studied. The text below cites proof: "not knowing" means never having heard of it before; "not seeing" means having heard of it but not recognizing it; one does not necessarily have committed [an offense], but simply not knowing and not seeing warrants the application of disciplinary treatment.
