Among the third five, regarding the third, prohibiting intimate association is because he must first stay far away; the Vinaya text has the character "should" (應) above it. The fourth, ordering him to stay far away, is because he is fond of intimate association. The fifth, not speaking differently, is frivolous speech among the ninety [pāyattikas]. Question: For the five kinds before and after, being able to do them when not under disciplinary treatment can be called 'curtailment'; but the third set of five faults, and the first three faults of the fourth set, are prohibited at other times as well and fundamentally must not be done, so why is it called 'curtailment'? Answer: It is truly as your question asks. Now, with a view to preventing and cutting off what he was previously fond of violating, it can also be called curtailment; however, because it violates the rules of disciplinary practice, it differs from ordinary offenses.
