In [the section on] sending [him] to apologize: first, it explains the selection and assignment [of a companion]. Among the eight dharmas, the fifth—'accepting another's words'—means not stubbornly refusing. The seventh concerns conduct and karma; the rest all pertain to understanding and capability. In the eighth, regarding the character 'yi' (deliberation), the Vinaya root text does not take the radical 'yan'; using the plain character is correct. 'Leading...' below explains going to make deśanā. First ordering him to inform the patron to accept deśanā means summoning [the patron] to receive it. 'If...' below next instructs how to assess the situation. Regarding 'Possessing...', the Vinaya states: 'If he does not accept, one should go to a place within sight but out of earshot, place the bhikṣu undergoing the karman within sight (causing him to see it with his eyes, so his mind softens and he accepts the deśanā) but out of earshot (fearing he might hear the performance of the act), instruct him to make deśanā according to the Dharma, and come again to speak to [the patron]: "Householder, receive the deśanā. That bhikṣu previously committed an offense; deśanā has already been made for him, and the offense is already eliminated." If he accepts, it is well. If he does not accept, the offending bhikṣu should go himself to make deśanā.' 'If the laity...' below finally shows the lifting and release. When the deśanā is completed and the layperson is pleased, this sufficiently demonstrates compliance.
