In deciding offenses: first, it shows the deficiency of the text. From "According to" downwards, it judges by principle. The ten masters' knowing of one another is strictly confined to the four grave offenses; because those undergoing penance for a saṃghāvaśeṣa can still be included in the quorum. The disciple's knowing of the master, however, extends to all classes [of offenses]; hence it says "up to," and so on. From "Knowing" downwards, it rebukes forceful reception. From "Since" downwards, it admonishes selection. From "Text" downwards, the Vinaya says: "If someone does not select a person to take dependence upon, and the master has broken precepts or views, the Buddha said: 'From this day forward, one must not fail to select a master to take dependence upon.'" (This clarifies the upādhyāya by analogy.)
