Under 'two-gendered': First, it illustrates the characteristics. The Samantapāsādikā has three kinds: first, one who can become pregnant oneself and can also impregnate another; second, one who can only become pregnant oneself; third, one who can only impregnate another. All three are disqualifying impediments (nān), as all have two genders. The text from 'If' down uses the loss [of precepts] to illustrate reception [of precepts], which is one of the four types of abandonment. According to the Commentary, these are subsumed under the three obstacles: A paṇḍaka has abundant lustful desires, so this is subsumed under the obstacle of defilements; also, being unable to function as a man, it is also encompassed by the obstacle of karmic retribution. The nine items—violating a nun, theft, schism, and the five deadly sins—are all obstacles of karma. Non-humans, animals, and the two-gendered: these three are obstacles of karmic retribution.
