In the section "Presenting Examples": First, explaining that what is complete in the root is not taken [from elsewhere] shows that there is a tradition followed. Such as the heavy and light divisions and clusters, the karmans of the saṃgha, ordination, deśanā, disciplinary suspension, boundary establishment, poṣadha, varṣā, and pravāraṇā—the persons employed and the methods used mostly stem from our own school. Furthermore, below it notes that different divisions are not identical and one does not take from other branches; all of this has this meaning. Under "The rest...": Second, it lists and shows four examples. First, "incomplete" has two types: 1. Unclear, such as the fifteen kinds of abbreviated poṣadha and declaring a mountain in the east when there is a mountain, and the like. 2. Insufficient, such as a four-person karman not removing deśanā, forfeiture, and so forth. The text below marks each separately; examining them with these two meanings, this can be seen. Second, "those superseding the earlier": such as reciting the precepts in song; the Manual says this is a superseded teaching of the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya. (Such as testing non-Buddhists, or fish and meat as principal food; although they are similarly superseded teachings, they can only be discussed when arriving at the six masters below. Here it is provisionally based on the various Vinayas; the ancient records conflated them, which scholars must recognize.) Third, "having principle but lacking text": such as relinquishing precepts in front of a madman being invalid; this has an insufficient sense, hence he cites the Daśādhyāya-vinaya and others to corroborate it. (Such as determining the yojana: based on the Vinaya's reciting the precepts on the fourteenth and arriving in advance on the thirteenth, based on a strenuous hundred li, he thereupon used the lowest grade from the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa as definitive. Also, the thirteen impediments not inquiring about a corrupt bhikṣu: based on the reverse inquiry in bhikṣuṇī ordination, he cites the explicit text of the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra. All these belong to the six masters below.) Fourth, "lacking text but having transactions": such as stating that the three robes ought to be received and held, and the untimed, leftover, and overnight not being received all clarifying the procedure for adding the three medicines, yet lacking the text for receiving. Or stating that in establishing boundaries and gathering the saṃgha, there is no text for the six natural marks, and so forth. "As below": concludes and demonstrates.
