丈夫者。《疏》云:男子通名;丈者,極形之量;孔子九尺餘,亦有一丈者。初科四句,初句志大,次句節高,三謂行有始卒,四即心無輕動;必反此四,雖是男子,則非丈夫;卓然,謂高立也。風霜喻衰辱危難等事。鏗,堅也。達,至也。
Regarding 'a true man' (zhangfu): The Commentary says: A common designation for a man; 'zhang' is the measure of full stature; Confucius was over nine chi, and there were also those of one zhang. The first section has four phrases: the first phrase means great aspiration; the second phrase means high integrity; the third means practices that have a beginning and an end; the fourth means a mind without fickle movement. If one goes entirely contrary to these four, even if male, he is not a true man. 'Lofty' (zhuoran) means standing tall. 'Wind and frost' metaphorically refers to decline, humiliation, danger, hardship, and the like. 'Keng' means firm. 'Da' means reaching.
