Regarding the note on the fourth [mindfulness] stating 'according to whether one has them or not,' this means that prescribed items such as robes and bowls must be completely maintained in principle; if encountering conditions where they are temporarily lacking, one should keep it in mind and procure them early. As for other extra [items] of the three types, if one has not had leisure within the time limit, fearing one might forget, one must be mindful of them. People today are constantly devoid of prescribed items, and throughout life never perform deśanā purification (śuddhi); day after day facing the noble [images], they state that they lack robes and have not purified them. Being bewildered about the teaching and showing contempt for the Dharma, they have come all the way to this point; regarding words of Dharma discourse, reforming oneself is what is valued.
