Relinquishing the precepts: in total there are four ways of relinquishing: first, relinquishing by ritual; second, relinquishing at the end of life; third, the arising of two physical forms (hermaphroditism); fourth, severing the roots of goodness. Here, the single type of relinquishing by ritual is clarified. Furthermore, relinquishment covers both gradual and sudden: if one directly becomes a white-robed layperson, all three sets of precepts are lost simultaneously, which is called sudden relinquishment (the five, ten, and full [precepts]). If one relinquishes the full [precepts] to become a śrāmaṇera, or relinquishes the full and ten [precepts] to become an upāsaka, this is called gradual relinquishment. Know this briefly in this manner; the rest is extensive as in the Commentary.
