In the doctrinal assessment: when practice is accomplished after five rains, one is permitted not to rely on another. This does not violate the teaching, but in personal practice there is still a lack. If one certainly aspires to advance, one should follow a master again. This means that, without distinguishing between the foolish and the wise, all must [take dependance] for their entire lives. Below, 'the Vinaya states...' cites evidence; it is understandable. That it 'runs through all teachings' refers to the Nirvāṇa-sūtra text. Furthermore, the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: When the Buddha first attained awakening, he surveyed all people and found none superior to himself. He thought: 'The Dharma I have attained is that through which I became a Buddha; I should take the Dharma as my master.' Since this appears frequently in the sūtras and treatises, [the master] ordered it to be expounded extensively.
