In the Five Hundred Questions: first, regarding the offense of theft for taking and using things without taking dependance, this must be restricted to personal property; if the master furthermore does not permit it, since they are not in a sheltering relationship, using it presumptuously is equivalent to theft. If it is Saṃgha property, it is shared equally by the [Saṃgha of the] ten directions; or if the master grants general permission, it does not constitute theft; in principle, as in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, it is a duṣkṛta for violating the teaching. Alternatively, the treatise master may have made the rule strict, determining the offense according to the conditions, so doctrinally it is not a grave pārājika. From 'if...' downward, regarding not reciting the precepts: when one's monastic rains equal the rank of a master, but one is ignorant of teachings and practice, one is unworthy of offerings, and therefore it is likewise considered an offense of theft. This should also be resolved as above.
