成不中，《五分》，初明弟子受教之詞。《本律》無文，今須準用。先下，明不識觀量。若依下，明師不答。《四分》。遣使謂身不現前，不成作法。遣受即弟子慢易，遣與謂師之率爾。

Under 'Success or Failure': In the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, it first explains the disciple's words for receiving instruction. The root Vinaya has no text for this; now it must be applied by analogy. From 'first' downward, it explains failure to discern and deliberate. From 'if depending' downward, it explains the teacher not responding. The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya: Sending a messenger means the person is not present in person, so the rite is not accomplished. Sending [a messenger] to receive it is the disciple's negligence; sending [a messenger] to grant it is the teacher's flippancy.
