Under 'Instructional Admonition': The first text, from the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, has four stages in order of extensive and abridged: first, it explains extensively expounding the Tripiṭaka. Dawn, midday, and twilight are the three periods of the day. From 'if not' downward, it is explaining the Tripiṭaka in an abridged manner. The precept-marks of the Vinayapiṭaka, and the three categories of the sūtras and treatises, are all the essentials. (The five aggregates, twelve sense bases, and eighteen elements are the three categories.) From 'if receiving' downward, one also takes meditation and recitation as opportunities to instruct. From 'if not' downward, it is directly giving restraints without citing sūtras or vinaya. The above four methods, though varying in verbosity and brevity, all require the three periods of the day.
