Under the Bodhisattvabhūmi: It adduces an extremely evil person to illustrate the offense, which is even worse than that. How can those who love to be teachers of others realize it is not easy? 'Caṇḍāla': In the Sounds and Meanings of the Scriptures, it is translated as 'stern and fierce,' and also as 'one in charge of killing people,' which is the name for an executioner. In the Five Hundred Questions: It states that in the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, there was a monk who ordained disciples but did not teach them, and committed many unlawful acts. At the end of his life, he was born among dragons, enduring suffering he could not bear. He then examined his past lives: originally as a śrāmaṇera he did not keep the prohibitions and precepts, nor did his teacher instruct him. He gave rise to thoughts of anger toward the teacher. It happened that his teacher, along with five hundred people, boarded a ship to cross the sea; the dragon emerged from the water, seized the ship, and demanded this monk. The crowd questioned him, and he related the original cause. The crowd had no choice and wished to seize the monk. He said: 'I will enter the water myself, there is no need to seize me'; he then threw himself into the water and lost his life.
