Under 'Citing Exhortations': In that sūtra, there was a young monk who had not been ordained long and had not heard the Dharma and Vinaya. When begging for food, he did not know the proper sequence. When monks reprimanded and remonstrated with him, he did not obey; the Buddha thereupon imparted an admonition. The text is as in the Manual. 'Unskilled' and so on refers to being ignorant of the teaching. From 'all that which' downward, it explains committing faults. From 'turning toward' downward, it shows the retribution in the present life. From 'renouncing precepts' downward, it explains the 'turning toward death' above. From 'committing a principal [offense]' downward, it explains 'sharing the suffering of death' above. From 'therefore' downward, it concludes with an exhortation. In the text, the phrase 'meaning sharing the suffering of death' appears twice; in accordance with the sūtra, the upper clause should say 'meaning turning toward death.' The sūtra states: 'What is called "death" refers to renouncing the precepts and the like; "sharing the suffering of death" refers to committing a principal offense and the like.' In the sūtra, it takes up [the terms] and explains them; now it is changed in the conclusion below, so the words should not differ. Collating it against the cited sūtra, it is definitely a scribal error; one must examine the root text and not labor to force an interpretation.
