Second, concerning rebuke and admonition, the narrative on correct and incorrect methods divides into three. First, admonishing one to evaluate oneself. From "If one harbors" downward, next is showing the correct Dharma. There are four steps in sequence. The first clause explains benefiting others. The next clause explains careful observation. From "Further, relying on" downward, the forms of transgression are brought forth. "Relying on the words of rebuke" refers to the five kinds below; heavy or light are applied accordingly, hence it says "advancing or retreating." From "Relying on the transgression" downward, this is the actual scolding. From "If the transgression" downward, the third part exhorts following the teaching: first, listing the faults; from "It is appropriate" downward, properly exhorting. "Ting" means to cease. "Mean-spirited mind" refers to all the faults above. "The method of transcendence" refers to the previous four dharmas. Yet to speak of it is very easy, while to do it is exceedingly difficult; if one does not harbor anger, how would a scolding even be seen? Although it is said that such exists in the world, when have we ever witnessed it! If one truly recognizes one's own mind, it is better to restrain and endure.
