In the detailed explanation, the first passage begins by citing the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya to show agreement. The poṣadha day encompasses all three days in common. Question: May any of the three days be used at will, or not? Answer: People of the world mostly cling to disputes and have not grasped the Patriarchal Master's intent. If one asserts that any may be used universally, why does the Karma Commentary say: on the fourteenth day one preaches the Dharma and confers the refuges for the laity, and on the sixteenth day an extension is exceptionally permitted due to adversity, which cannot be taken as a constant standard? If one clings solely to the fifteenth day, why does the commentary text say: all three days are universally standard, and an exception is granted allowing them to be used at will; if one must use those two days, when checked against the seven improper forms, which of the improper forms would include it? Both [positions] present difficulties. However, in the commentary, it was merely feared that worldly people might routinely use the other days, and the intent was to fix specifically upon the fifteenth as standard, which is why they were separately distinguished; yet when conditions warrant their shared use, it is not deemed unlawful. This is just as pravāraṇā, although applicable to three days, is fixed in the Manual upon the sixteenth; this does not mean the other days are impermissible, and by analogy this may be understood. Below, the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya is cited to reveal differences. The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya is also the same. Citing this text is intended to take the fifteenth as the regular norm; hence the commentary says: the first two are for the laity, in which case one preaches the Dharma and confers the refuges; the last one is for the clergy, in which case one purifies the mind and recites the precepts.
