In the second part, adducing proofs to properly clarify, first is the Sūtra of Maudgalyāyana's Inquiries (also named the Sūtra on the Relative Weight of Retribution for Precept Violation). First, it indicates the offender. In terms of the three lower assemblies, all commit duṣkṛta, and their sinful retribution is the same as for monks; here, because it generally covers the six categories of offenses, only the two assemblies are mentioned. From "without shame..." onward, it shows the offending mind. However, karmic retributions follow the mind, being indeterminate in duration; sometimes, with defiled, heavy, and wrong views, even if one commits a minor offense, how could it stop at this number? Sometimes, with shame and a compassionate mind, even if one commits a heavy offense, it will not necessarily be of this number. One should know by inference that the sūtra temporarily relies on one aspect, and therefore specifies that future retributions will not deviate based on shamelessness and contempt; if one definitely possesses this mind, then it will definitely be according to the number of years. The above four lines, based on the sūtra, run through the six categories of offenses below. From "committing..." onward, it lists the marks. The sūtra generally says "falling into hell"; according to the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya, they are specifically paired with six hells. "Niraya" is the name of hell, translated here as "place of no escape". First, in duṣkṛta: the palace of the Four Heavenly Kings is parallel to the sun and moon, situated halfway up Mount Sumeru. Falling into Niraya refers to the Saṃjīva hell. Five hundred celestial years equal one day and night in that hell. As for human "nine hundred thousand" years: fifty human years equal one celestial day; one thousand five hundred years equal one month; eighteen thousand years equal one year; one hundred eighty thousand years equal ten years; one million eight hundred thousand years equal one hundred years; nine million years equal five hundred years. (The above follows the minor numbering system; if using the major numbering system, where one hundred thousand is a "thousand", it should say ninety thousand; I suspect the sūtra text is mistaken.)
