In the next section, Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: first, protecting brahmacarya; it cannot be lived in. From "If..." downward, it explains straining before use; either it was originally devoid [of insects], or it was once already strained. In spring and summer, in the morning and midday, one should carefully inspect [the water]. Pañcavargika-vinaya: first, it indicates insect-filled water; insects taken to be visible then enter the limit of the prohibition. The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā: "Śāriputra, observing with the divine eye the insects in the air to be like sand by the water or millet in a vessel, thereupon ceased eating. The Buddha, on this account, formulated the prohibition, saying: 'Only what is seen by the fleshly eye and obtained by the straining bag [is counted].'" The text is the same as this. Therefore, one knows that the one-tenth of a subtle particle of the Mahāsaṃnipāta is not prohibited by the teaching. From "If..." downward, it next explains that use constitutes an offense. From "Without..." downward, the third prohibits holding [the vessel] when traveling; violating this is a duṣkṛta.
