In encouraging faith, first it indicates the sūtras. That they are "spoken by the Buddha" means that the person is trustworthy; the Sūtra of Maudgalyāyana's Inquiries was translated by An Shigao of the Han, and the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] was translated by Dharmakṣema of the Northern Liang. In the canon, there are sūtras with "lost translations", meaning there is no name of a translation master; there are also "doubtful sūtras", meaning it is difficult to clarify whether they are genuine or spurious; there are further "apocryphal sūtras", whose shallowness can be distinguished. Fearing that foolish people, although seeing the sūtra text, might think that over distant time and in different lands, with texts transmitted this far, how could one know it was spoken by the Buddha, this was specifically refuted. Nowadays many share this view and generally fall into the thicket of heterodoxy, which is truly lamentable. From "do not..." onward, it directly encourages. "Not self-aware" means not examining one's own faults. "Penal codes" refers to undergoing suffering in the six hells. Regarding "long kalpas", the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states: suppose there is a great city four thousand li square, filled with mustard seeds, and a long-lived immortal takes away one mustard seed every hundred years; even when the city is empty, the kalpa is still not exhausted. Furthermore, if a stone four thousand li square is brushed once every hundred years; even when the stone is worn away completely, the kalpa is still not exhausted. This illustrates that the time of a kalpa cannot be exhausted.
