In rebuking the foolish, the first section: the upper line shows their foolishness and darkness. "Slandering themselves" means that being disciples of the Buddha, they conversely slander the Buddha's teaching; moreover, having personally received the precepts, they conversely slander the vinaya precepts. "Like yellow leaves", and so forth: this clarifies their illicit reliance, namely because the Buddhist sūtras contain these words. The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: when an infant cries (analogous to those of small capacity), the parents take the yellow leaves of a willow tree and say to it, "Do not cry, I will give you gold" (analogous to the Tathāgata applying expedient means). When the infant sees it, it generates the idea that it is real gold and then stops crying (meaning the attainment of nirvāṇa). Yet these willow leaves are truly not gold (not the Great Nirvāṇa); when the infant sees wooden oxen, wooden horses, wooden men, or wooden women, it likewise generates the idea of men, women, and so on (the analogy is also the same as above). This clarifies that the Tathāgata was recounting in retrospect his intention of having previously applied the small [vehicle]; when it came to the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], the doubts about expedient means were resolved, and all converged into the permanently abiding—how could there still be a small [vehicle]! This is what is called not understanding the teaching.
