明戒護中，初科，先徵起。由下，釋通。定慧依因，萬行宗主，故云生善最也。匡攝僧宗，緣持佛法，故云建立強也。略舉兩端，以彰體用。標宗所謂順則三寶住持，辦比丘事；違則覆滅正法，翻種苦業，即同此意也。

In 'Clarifying the Precept-Guard', the first section begins by raising the inquiry. 'Due to...' and what follows explains and resolves it. Because it is the relying cause of samādhi and wisdom, and the master of the myriad practices, it is therefore said, 'It is supreme in generating good.' Because it supports and guides the lineage of the Saṅgha, and condition-sustains the Buddha's Dharma, it is therefore said, 'Its establishment is strong.' Briefly raising the two points reveals its essence and function. When the statement of the thesis says: conforming [with it], the Triratna is maintained and the tasks of a bhikṣu are accomplished; contravening [it], the true Dharma is destroyed and one conversely plants painful karma—this has the same meaning.
