[Precept] thirty-nine. (The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. People made sacrificial offerings at crossroads and even in shrines for their parents and others; rag-robe-wearing, begging bhikṣus took and ate it themselves, and because of worldly criticism the prohibition was instituted.) Regarding the name: whenever a bhikṣu eats, he must receive it from another person; deliberately violating this instruction is called "eating unreceived [food]".
