佛在舍衛。城人為父母等，於四衢道頭乃至廟中祭祀供養，糞掃衣乞食比丘自取食之，居士共嫌。比丘以過白佛，便制此戒。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. The people of the city made offerings and sacrifices for their parents and others at crossroads or in shrines. Bhikṣus who wore rag-robes and begged for alms took and ate it themselves, and the householders criticized them together. The bhikṣus reported this fault to the Buddha, who thereupon formulated this precept.
