Under the intent of the prohibition, in this Vinaya, it first shows the strict injunction. As disciples, they must receive the teacher's instruction and must not transgress it. From "even" onward, it clarifies the urgent prohibition. Nowadays, those who study the Dharma mostly indulge in liquor. Confronted with this compassionate instruction, how could one not feel ashamed! From "due to" onward, it reveals the faults: 1. bad complexion; 2. little strength; 3. dim eyesight (these three and the sixth impair physical appearance); 4. manifesting marks of anger (this one and the ninth disturb the spirit); 5. ruining livelihoods and resources (destroying the household); 6. increasing illness; 7. augmenting quarrels and litigations (growing karma); 8. lacking reputation (loss of virtue); 9. having little wisdom; 10. falling into the three evil destinies at the end of life. (The nine above are present evils; the tenth is future suffering.) Looking at these ten faults, present matters are brilliantly clear. For the foolish of the world to conversely claim it increases strength and cures illness, is that not mistaken!
