In the third, the *Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā* divides into four: first, clarifying that the original dye is illicit. Turmeric root: the *Gazetteer* says it is produced in the country of Uḍḍiyāna; its root is yellowish-red and can dye robes. Safflower: the *Account* says it is today's red flower, which dyes a reddish-yellow color. Lac: Master Ying says it should be called *tānyou*, translated here as monkey blood. Indigo: that is today's indigo blue. Spotting with a duṣkṛta means spotting the illicit color with the three proper colors; the treatise only designates it as a light offense, but in the Vinaya the original dye must be proper, so the note distinguishes this. From 'If previously' onward, it next clarifies changing the proper to illicit. From 'If with' onward, the third clarifies whether the spotted color is proper or illicit. From 'Therefore' onward, the fourth clarifies first illicit and then proper. In listing the colors, excluding madder, deep crimson, and bright scarlet, the rest are all yellow. Deep crimson (*jiàng*) is red.
