推釋中,初句總徵。餘下,別釋,先經後律;經中又二,初四句,示詮相虛通。化跡,謂往昔因緣;因果,即三世報應。事隨理者,事別理通,經宗理故;設有事相,融歸於理;故有一多互入,大小相容;況意在忘言,隨立隨遣,故者言無寄也。意下六句,顯幽深難學。猶恐愚者,不體今意,妄生輕重,故此遮之。筌,即取魚之器,喻言教也。
In deducing and explaining, the first phrase makes a general inquiry. From "The rest..." onward, it explains specifically, first the sūtras and then the vinaya. Within the sūtras there are again two parts: the first four phrases show that the explained marks are empty and open. "Traces of transformation" refers to past causes and conditions; "cause and effect" refers to retribution across the three times. "Phenomena following principle" means that phenomena are distinct while principle is open, and sūtras take principle as their core; even if there are phenomenal marks, they harmonize and return to principle; thus there is mutual entry of the one and the many, and mutual accommodation of the large and the small; how much more so when the intention lies in forgetting words, discarding them as soon as they are established, hence words have nothing to rely on. The six phrases from "The meaning..." onward reveal that it is profound, subtle, and difficult to study. Fearing that foolish people might not grasp the present intention and might rashly generate thoughts of light and heavy, it is therefore refuted here. A "trap" is an implement for catching fish, a metaphor for spoken teachings.
