In [the section on] non-offense: First, it explains that making a case out of various other substances [is not an offense], because they are not bone or ivory/horn. From 'If' downwards, it next explains that ivory and horn not used to make a case [is not an offense]. There are seventeen articles in all; the Vinaya text separates them throughout using the word 'if'. 1. The head of a khakkhara staff and its ferrule/cap. 'Biāo' (鏢) is pronounced piāo, or in the departing tone; it is the lower ornament of a knife or sword sheath; here it refers to the ornamentation of a khakkhara staff's ferrule. The six characters beginning with 'parasol' [refer to] two items for one thing. The Zhigui says: 'The parasol's zǐ is the handle on the stem of the sunshade; the dǒutóu biāo is also the upward-facing cup on the parasol, decorated with ivory or horn.' (The Record of the Western Seas says that monks in the Western lands mostly carry small parasols themselves.) 4. The binding on the parasol cup: it is not clear what item this is. 7. The ruyi, that is, a scratching stick used for scratching an itch. 8. Slotted ring-clasp: [jué is] pronounced jué, meaning a ring that does not join end to end. The 'Chapter on the Two Robes' says: 'Having wound the robe around the body, one uses a cord to encircle and fasten it.' 9. Spoon (bǐ), that is, a spoon. 11. Robe toggle hook: [huá is] pronounced huá, meaning a horizontal toggle hook inside a loop. 12. The Vinaya says: a spatula for eye medicine. 14. Hairpin/comb: tì (揥) is pronounced in the fanqie tā-lì; the Vinaya properly writes zhāi (摘). 16. Meditation weight, that is, used to weigh down the head when sitting in meditation.
