[Pāyattika] 90. (The Buddha was in Śākya. Nanda was four finger-breadths shorter than the Buddha; people saw him from afar and thought he was the Buddha. The Buddha ordered Nanda to wear a blackened robe; the group of six made theirs of the Buddha's measure, so he laid down the prohibition.) The interlinear note names it the precept against three robes of excessive size. In the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, the length of the three robes follows the height of one's body, taking only the Buddha's robe as the outer limit. If so, why is the bowl's measure identical? Answer: Because their material substance is different (the Buddha used a stone bowl). The robe's measurements differ because their substance is the same. Showing identity and difference mutually prevents confusion.
