In indicating the fundamental doctrine, the first two sentences praise the depth of the marks; the upper sentence presents it, and the lower sentence directly praises it. In the first part: the upper two words indicate the breadth of the expounding text; the lower four words clarify what is expounded and where it returns. As for the word 'solely,' there are two explanations: first, that practice arises based on the essence, and because practice involves compliance and violation, maintenance and violation are thereby differentiated; the capacities and conditions are not single, and the prohibitions are numerous as dust and sand; gathered into an expounding text, it is called the Vinaya Piṭaka; examining its original formulation, it clarifies nothing else—this is the explanation according to the root teaching generally. Second, in the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya*, the initial listing of the monks' and nuns' prātimokṣas constitutes maintenance through cessation, which conversely becomes violation through action; the subsequent twenty khandhakas and so on constitute maintenance through action, violation of which is violation through cessation—this is speaking broadly; yet if one considers their mutual combination, from beginning to end the entire text is fully equipped with all four practices—this is the explanation specific to the textual sections. The lower sentence directly praises it. Because it is the general principle, it is said to be 'truly profound'; the general is the great framework of the expounded marks, and the principle is the universal truth beyond the words; compared to the preceding specific matters, neither of the two is profound. The three sentences from 'not' downward clarify the difficulty of understanding; the first two sentences select persons. The upper sentence evaluates study: one may accumulate study to exhaustion yet fail to penetrate the subtle; such is not genuine study. The lower sentence evaluates understanding: one may fathom the obscure by following eccentric paths yet fail to exhaust the principle; such is not genuine understanding. Alternatively, the two sentences may be explained through four meanings: first, duration of study; second, clarity of understanding; third, depth of effort; fourth, correctness of principle. From 'then' downward, it reveals the difficulty. Conversely showing that only such a person can be conversed with regarding maintenance and violation, which will then be readily seen.
